IT Exports Set to Hit Record .5 Billion as Pakistan's Digital Economy Booms
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's IT exports are on track to surpass $4.5 billion this fiscal year, Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja told the National Assembly during the Question Hour session, as the government accelerates its ambitious digital transformation agenda.
The minister revealed that IT exports have been growing at an impressive rate of nearly 20 percent annually over the past several years, driven by comprehensive government reforms, targeted policy support, and expanded digital skills initiatives. She noted that when the current government assumed office, IT exports stood at around $2.4 billion, meaning the sector has nearly doubled in size within a few years.
Minister Khawaja informed the House that an ambitious target of $15 billion in IT exports has been set for the medium term, alongside an additional $10 billion contribution expected from digital transformation initiatives across various sectors of the economy. She said Pakistan's information technology sector has emerged as the country's largest export earner after textiles, contributing significantly to foreign exchange reserves.
The minister highlighted that fibre-optic connectivity has expanded significantly across the country. Household fibre-based connections have increased from 1.9 million in 2024 to 5.1 million within just two years. Pakistan recently conducted one of the world's largest spectrum auctions, involving 480 megahertz of spectrum, which is expected to enhance 4G data speeds and lay the groundwork for initial 5G services rollout.
On human capital development, the minister told the House that Pakistan is training over 500,000 children annually in digital skills through various government and private sector programs. This massive initiative aims to build a tech-savvy workforce capable of meeting global market demands and competing with other nations in the international IT outsourcing market.
Addressing cybersecurity concerns, the minister informed the National Assembly that Pakistan is strengthening its digital security framework through the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and the National Computer Emergency Response Team (National CERT) to combat rising digital fraud and cybercrime threats. She said the government is also working on comprehensive data protection legislation to build trust in the digital ecosystem.
The IT sector's remarkable growth trajectory has been supported by Pakistan's large pool of young, English-speaking talent and the increasing adoption of remote work by international companies looking for cost-effective software development destinations. Industry experts believe the $4.5 billion milestone is just the beginning of a sustained growth phase for Pakistan's technology sector.
